Abstract: This article focuses on the integrative medicine approach to prevention and treatment (drug therapy, dietary therapy, nutritional supplements and botanical medicines, mind and body approaches) of type 2 diabetes. The epidemiology and pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes as well as type II are briefly reviewed. The metabolic syndrome of insulin resistance (syndrome X) which often precedes a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is also discussed.
