Abstract:

Causes of serious wilting which led to serious damage in crops of the new rice cv. Yushin in 1976 were investigated. High rates of applied N increased the number of spikelets/unit leaf area giving a high sink:source ratio, increased the length of lower nodes and increased the respiration rate compared to that in cv. Tongil. Root development and root activity as measured by oxidation of alpha -naphthylamine were decreased by application of 300 kg N + 100 kg P2O5/ha and this effect was increased by 50% shading. Wilting was increased by high rates of N but was increased more markedly by shading with high N. It was concluded that the serious wilting damage in 1976 was due to low light intensities during growth combined with high N rates.
