Abstract:

This handbook includes: formulae for calculating the main European feed energy values from digestible proximate constituents; diagrams giving a classification of these systems; factors for calculating energy values; US (NRC 1968-1971), UK (ARC 1980), West German (DLG 1961) and East German (1971, 1980) feeding standards for beef and dairy cattle and sheep; tables giving proximate composition and digestibilities for 249 forage crops, 115 conserved forages (silage and hay), 85 varieties of straw and other fibrous byproducts, 37 roots, tubers and fleshy fruits, 110 grains and oilseeds, 78 processing byproducts, 35 feedstuffs of animal origin and 16 others, distinguished by country of origin; a table using symbols to show toxic plant constituents; and an index. The introduction and tables are in 4 languages; in tables and the index plants are given by Latin names, German name or rendering, and English, French and/or Spanish if available.
