Document Title: North American species of
Cuterebra, the rabbit and rodent bot flies (Diptera: Cuterebridae).
Abstract: The North American species of Cuterebra are revised. The first part of the book includes introductory sections on the family position of Cuterebra (treated as belonging to the distinct family Cuterebridae, as opposed to a subfamily of the Oestridae or Calliphoridae), history of research and classification of the genus, evolutionary origins of Cuterebra and its association with mammals (particularly lagomorphs and rodents), host-parasite relationships, accidental and aberrant hosts (such as domestic animals, wild carnivores and man), rearing and handling Cuterebra, and morphological terminology. Keys are given to the Nearctic species, followed by synoptic accounts of species arranged by group (C. fontinella, C. cuniculi, C. buccata and C. americana species groups). A total of 34 named species (12 of which are described as new), 3 subspecies (2 new) and 1 variety are included in the revision, which was based on 3196 specimens. Sources of material and natural hosts of Cuterebra in North America are listed in appendices. Indices to both hosts and cuterebrid species are given.
