Abstract:

This publication celebrates the 100th anniversary of the public health laboratories of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, which were founded in 1892. In 1940, the laboratories were formally united as the Instituto Adolfo Lutz (IAL). The publication is divided into 3 parts, the first of which traces the history of the laboratories, while the 2nd part is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Adolfo Lutz (1855-1940), the Brazilian scientist and medical doctor after whom the united laboratories were named in recognition of his services to public health in Brazil; the 3rd part discusses the current work of the IAL (including studies on virology, human leptospirosis, electron microscopy, bacterial meningitis and Brazilian purpuric fever).
