Abstract:

This chapter reviews drug and hormonal effects on vitamin D metabolism. Anticonvulsants, ethanol and corticosteroids, and the mechanisms by which they affect vitamin D metabolism are discussed in detail. Section headings include: Hormone effects on vitamin D metabolism-parathyroid hormone and parathyroid hormone-related protein, calcitonin, growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor, prolactin, insulin, sex steroids, thyroid hormone, prostaglandins and tumour necrosis factor-α and interferon-γ; Drug effects on vitamin D metabolism-anticonvulsants, corticosteroids, ethanol, ketoconazole, hypolipaemics, bisphosphonates, thiazide diuretics, calcium channel blockers, heparin, cimetidine, aluminium, antituberculous agents, caffeine, theophylline, immunosuppressants, fluoride, Olestra and lithium.
