Document Title: Agricultural Science
Abstract: The paper discusses whether the Australian agricultural sector is attracting the brightest students. Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) scores for entry to Australian agricultural and environmental courses in 1997 indicate that agricultural education does not attract the brightest students. The agricultural sector is drawing these people from other courses. Various studies on the attitudes of prospective students regarding traditional agricultural education indicate that agriculture is an unpopular field of study for various reasons, and that a consequence of this low demand is downward pressure on TERs for agriculture. It is suggested that the rather than accept such a position, the profession may do well to consider where it wishes to position traditional agricultural education providers in meeting future sector requirements.
