Document Title: An entirely different game: the British influence on Brazilian football.
Abstract: The development of soccer in Brazil, and the role that British ex-patriots played in this development, are the main topics covered in this book. In particular, the roles of two men, Charles Miller and Harry Welfare, in taking the game to Brazil and popularizing it amongst the inhabitants are highlighted. Their presence, together with later settlers (players, coaches and referees) and tours by clubs such as Southampton, Exeter City and Motherwell, encouraged the development of soccer and contributed to a unique Brazilian style of play, based on improvisation and speed. The evolution of the game is traced chronologically in 16 chapters.
