Abstract: This paper presents a 130 000-year-long pollen record from Pittsburg Basin, Illinois, USA. Vegetation cover towards the end of the late Illinoian glaciation was Picea/Pinus. It was then replaced by a Quercus/Carya forest. Prairie pollen types and the charcoal:pollen ratio temporarily increased. Then, forest with high Juniperus percentages became dominant again. During the last interglaciation, the Basin was surrounded by vegetation different from that surrounding it during the present glaciation.
