Abstract: Farm survey data from Borno, north-eastern Nigeria, were used to analyse women's participation in agricultural co-operatives. The survey revealed that approximately 70% of the sampled women do not participate in any of the agricultural co-operatives, despite the fact that they are involved in small-scale agricultural production. These women were willing to participate in co-operatives but experienced socio-economic constraints. About 30% of the women farmers participate in co-operative activities such as group farming, livestock fattening, marketing, processing, and thrift and credit co-operatives. Women engaged in co-operative activities were better off, in terms of productivity and economic well-being, than women not participating in co-operatives. Measures to encourage increased participation of women in agricultural co-operatives are recommended.
