Title: Plants possessing antibacterial activity.

Abstract:

Extracts of 41 plants were tested for antibacterial activity by using 18 species of bacteria. The tested bacteria include: Escherichia coli (5 strains), Shigella spp. (4), Vibrios spp. (3), and one strain each of Klebsiella aerogenes, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Proteus morganii, Pseudomonas pyocyanea, Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus. Twenty-eight plants were found to be active on some bacteria. The plants having antibacterial activity were Ageratum conyzoides, Azadirachta indica; Cassia fistula, Coleus aromaticus [Plectranthus amboinicus], Cuminum cyminum, Cyperus scariosus, Embelia robusta, Emblica officinalis [Phyllanthus emblica], Eugenia caryophyllata [Syzygium aromaticum], Eugenia jambolana [Syzygium cumini], Eupatorium odoratum [Chromolaena odorata], Euphorbia milli, Euphorbia splendens, Garcinia mangostana, Giradimia zeylanica, Leucaena glauca [L. leucocephala], Neptunia oleracea, Nerium oleander, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, Phyllanthus urinaria, Pinus kesiya, Piper betle, Piper nigrum, Plumeria rubra, Rhoeo discolor [R. spathacea], Terminalia chebula and Vinca rosea [Catharanthus roseus].
