Abstract:

A field experiment was conducted in the experimental Farm at Assiut University, Egypt, during 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 seasons, to study the effect of inoculation with Thiobacillus, elemental sulfur application and nitrogen fertilizers on yield, quality and nutritional status of sugarbeet. Treatments were three levels of elemental sulfur (0, 0.6 and 1.2 ton/fed.) with or without Thiobacillus bacteria inoculation and three different nitrogen fertilizers ammonium sulphate (AS), ammonium nitrate (AN) and Urea (U) at the level of 90 kg/N. Elemental sulfur was applied before planting. Thiobacillus bacteria was mixed or not with beet seeds immediately before planting. Ammonium nitrate (AN) or ammonium sulphate (AS), elemental sulfur application up to 1.2 ton/fed. and inoculation with Thiobacillus increased the yield and improved the quality and the nutritional status of sugarbeets. Calcium and SO4 total contents in roots, N, K, Ca, Mg in tops significantly increased with elemental S up to 1.2 ton/fed or inoculation with Thiobacillus. Sodium contents of beet tops were decreased while Ca and Mg were increased with increasing the levels of elemental sulfur and/or inoculation with Thiobacillus. Interactions showed higher increases in the yield and improved the quality or total nutrient contents compared with their separate effects. Addition of elemental sulfur, inoculation with Thiobacillus and selection of the suitable nitrogen fertilizer were found to given optimum yield and quality of sugar beet.
