Document Title: Chambres d'Agriculture
Abstract: Statistics published by the French Ministry of Agriculture show that the total number of farms fell from 664 000 in 2000 to 590 000 in 2003. The decline has been particularly marked amongst farms with a land area of <20 ha, the number of which fell from 324 000 in 2000 to 267 000 in 2003. Between 2000 and 2003, the number of farms that were >100 ha in size increased from 78 000 to 84 000. Overall, the average farm size increased from 47 ha to 52 ha between 2000 and 2003. When analysed by segment, the decline in farm numbers is most significant (16%) for mixed farms. When analysed by region, the rate of decline in farm numbers between 2000 and 2003 was greatest in Corsica.
