Changes in treatment, procedures, equipment and the use of veterinary products occur frequently as new information becomes available. Whilst CAB International takes care to ensure that information in the Compendium is as up-to-date as possible, users are strongly advised to confirm that the information, especially with regard to drug usage, complies with the latest legislation and standards of practice.

With kind permission from their publishers, the veterinary products database in the Animal Health and Production Compendium holds data from the following publications:

The whole database is searchable using combined index lists of trade and generic names of products. Each set of data is also searchable individually using a variety of search criteria.

Five databases, Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products (NOAH), FARAD, Green Book, PUBCRIS and SINDAN's Manual de Produtos Veterinários are available direct from their publishers on the world wide web. Where a search of one of these databases alone is required and internet connection is possible, it is recommended that the datasets made available on-line are used.

Note that data are presented as supplied; any changes should be communicated to the individual publisher.

Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products - National Office of Animal Health Ltd (UK)

The National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) represents the UK animal medicines industry whose aim is to provide safe, effective, quality medicines for the treatment and welfare of all animals. The datasheets in the National Office of Animal Health Ltd (NOAH) Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products were prepared independently by each participating company and each proof was checked and the text confirmed as correct by the participant concerned.

Details of how to order a printed copy of the latest compendium can be obtained from the NOAH Compendium website

Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (USA)

This database is also available for searching on-line. See the FARAD home page for further information.

The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), which must approve all drugs meant to be marketed for use in animals, establishes tolerances for drug residues (similar to speed limits) to ensure food safety. The USFDA also establishes "withdrawal times" or "withholding periods" which are times after drug treatment when milk and eggs are not to be used for food, and during which animals are not to be slaughtered. This allows time to the animals to eliminate the drug residues.

The Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD) is a repository of comprehensive residue avoidance information. FARAD is also sanctioned to provide these estimates to the United States Pharmacopeia-Drug Information (USP-DI) Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee. Since 1982 FARAD has been working with producers, extension specialists and agents, and veterinarians to help avoid and mitigate residue problems. As a cooperative multi-state program, FARAD is available nationwide in the USA to offer advice about residue avoidance.

Green Book (FDA Approved Animal Drug Book) (USA)

The Generic Animal Drug and Patent Restoration act requires that each sponsor of an approved animal drug must submit to the FDA certain information regarding patents held for the animal drug or its method of use. The Act requires that this information, as well as a list of all animal drug products approved for safety and effectiveness, be made available to the public. This list must be updated monthly under the provisions of the Act.

The list, known as the "Green Book," was first published in January 1989. Updates have been added monthly since then. Each January, the list is published in its entirety. The book is published on a non-profit basis from information in a database maintained under a cooperative agreement between the US Department of Agriculture and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and funded through an interagency agreement between the FDA and the USDA. The current year Green Book is available in print form by subscription. The electronic Green Book is being developed to improve public access to the information contained in the databases that support its publication. The Web Site formerly known as the "FDA Approved Animal Drug Database" was a derivative of these databases. The initial offering of the electronic Green Book by the Drug Information Laboratory includes the "FDA Approved Animal Drug Database" files, all chapters of the printed Green Book and a searchable archive of monthly updates dating back to 1989.

The information about the Green Book in this edition of the Animal Health and Production Compendium dates from February 2003. A current, fully searchable version of the Green Book is available on-line.

Exclusivity periods

Under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, the approval of a New Animal Drug Application (NADA), or of a supplemental NADA, may in some cases provide the sponsor of the application with a period of exclusivity, as defined in the Act. This exclusivity period allows the sponsor to market the approved product for either 3 or 5 years, during which time no generic copy may be approved (in the case of 3-year exclusivity), or no generic application may be submitted (in the case of 5-year exclusivity). For more information consult the Green Book On-line.

PUBCRIS - Registered Product Database (Australia)

The Public Chemical Registration Information System (PUBCRIS) database is also available for searching on-line. To search the most up-to-date content go to PUBCRIS database on-line.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is the National Registration Authority for Agriculture and Veterinary Chemicals. PUBCRIS database contains details of agricultural and veterinary chemical products that are registered for use in Australia. Current data, which is updated nightly, includes the product name, registering company, active constituents and product category. PUBCRIS does not currently include information on 'Stopped' products, that is, those which may still be legally available for a limited time after lapse of registration.

PUBCRIS contains registered agricultural and veterinary products, many of which have exclusions, restrictions, or warnings associated with their use. PUBCRIS is a guide only. Agricultural and veterinary chemical products must always be used carefully, and it is imperative that the user always reads the label prior to purchasing or using the product. The NRA gives no warranties, express or implied, regarding the accuracy or completeness of the data on PUBCRIS. The inclusion of any information on any particular registered product does not constitute a recommendation by the NRA. If no Registration, Withholding Period, Poison Schedule, Label Active, or other information is listed, this should not be taken to mean that none apply. Sole responsibility and risk associated with the use of data on PUBCRIS, irrespective of the purpose to which that use is applied, is accepted by the user.
